Fee tables online are either out of date or quietly wrong about what the percentage is charged on. Mercari rewrote its fees in January 2025, Depop dropped its US selling fee in 2024, Poshmark tried new fees in late 2024 and reversed them within weeks, and eBay’s percentage applies to more of the order than most new sellers assume. This is the September 2026 picture for a US seller, checked against each platform’s own help pages.
The 2026 fee table
These are the standard fees for an individual US seller with no store subscription and no paid advertising. “Charged on” is the part that matters most — it decides whether the buyer’s shipping and tax cost you money.
| Platform | Seller fee | Charged on | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay (most categories, incl. most clothing) | 13.6% up to $7,500 + $0.30 per order (≤ $10) or $0.40 (> $10) | Item + shipping + sales tax | 250 free listings/month, then $0.35 each. Athletic shoes ≥ $150: 8%, no per-order fee. Handbags: 15% up to $2,000. |
| Poshmark | $2.95 flat under $15; 20% at $15+ | Sale price only | Buyer pays the shipping label. No listing or processing fees. |
| Mercari | 10% | Item + buyer-paid shipping | No processing fee since Jan 6, 2025. Buyer pays 3.6% Buyer Protection. Instant Pay: $3 per cash-out. |
| Depop (US) | 0% selling fee; ~3.3% + $0.45 payment processing | Item + shipping + tax (processing) | Selling fee removed July 2024. Boosted Listings are an extra, optional fee on boosted sales. |
| Etsy (US) | $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 processing | Item + shipping + gift wrap | Offsite Ads: 15% of attributed orders (12% once you pass $10k/yr). Used goods must be vintage (20+ yrs). |
| Facebook Marketplace | Shipped: 10%, $0.80 minimum. Local cash pickup: $0 | Item + shipping + tax | Fee applies to orders paid through Facebook checkout. |
| Whatnot | 8% commission + 2.9% + $0.30 processing | Commission: item price. Processing: full order incl. shipping and tax | Some categories (e.g. coins, electronics) have reduced commission — check Whatnot’s fee schedule. |
| Vinted (US) | $0 | — | Buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee (typically 5% + $0.70) and shipping. |
Depop’s processing rate
The 3.3% + $0.45 figure above is the rate widely reported by sellers and fee calculators; we couldn’t confirm it on Depop’s own help pages. Depop’s own July 2024 announcement confirms the selling fee was removed and that “the usual payment processing fee will still apply.” Check your own sale breakdown in the app.Worked example: a $25 sale
Assumptions, so you can redo the math for your own items: a $25 pre-owned clothing item, $8 shipping paid by the buyer (you spend it on the label, so it nets to zero), no sales tax in the math (see the callout below), no store subscription, no promoted/boosted listings, Etsy with no Offsite Ads sale. “Net” is what you keep from the $25 item price after fees.
| Platform | Fee math | Total fees | You net |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay | 13.6% × $33 + $0.40 | $4.89 | $20.11 |
| Poshmark | 20% × $25 | $5.00 | $20.00 |
| Mercari | 10% × $33 | $3.30 | $21.70 |
| Depop | 3.3% × $33 + $0.45 | $1.54 | $23.46 |
| Etsy* | $0.20 + 6.5% × $33 + (3% × $33 + $0.25) | $3.59 | $21.41 |
| Facebook (shipped) | 10% × $33 | $3.30 | $21.70 |
| Whatnot | 8% × $25 + (2.9% × $33 + $0.30) | $3.26 | $21.74 |
| Vinted | — | $0.00 | $25.00 |
*Etsy only if the item qualifies as vintage (20+ years old).
The spread between the most and least expensive platform is about $5 — which is exactly why a $25 item that sits for four months on Vinted can make you less than the same item that sells in a week on eBay. Your time, your storage and the money tied up in inventory are costs too.
Worked example: a $100 sale
Same assumptions, with a $100 item and $12 buyer-paid shipping ($112 order before tax). This is where percentage fees really separate.
| Platform | Fee math | Total fees | You net |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay | 13.6% × $112 + $0.40 | $15.63 | $84.37 |
| Poshmark | 20% × $100 | $20.00 | $80.00 |
| Mercari | 10% × $112 | $11.20 | $88.80 |
| Depop | 3.3% × $112 + $0.45 | $4.15 | $95.85 |
| Etsy* | $0.20 + 6.5% × $112 + (3% × $112 + $0.25) | $11.09 | $88.91 |
| Facebook (shipped) | 10% × $112 | $11.20 | $88.80 |
| Whatnot | 8% × $100 + (2.9% × $112 + $0.30) | $11.55 | $88.45 |
| Vinted | — | $0.00 | $100.00 |
Sales tax quietly raises eBay, Facebook and Depop fees
The tables leave tax out because rates vary by state. But eBay, Facebook and Depop’s processing fee are charged on tax the buyer pays, which you never keep. Every $10 of sales tax costs you $1.36 on eBay, $1.00 on Facebook and about $0.33 on Depop.
On the $100 eBay sale above with 8% tax on the full $112 order ($8.96 of tax), the final value fee rises by about $1.22 — so the “13.6%” fee is really about 16.9% of your item price.
Effective rate: the number to actually compare
The headline percentage is misleading because platforms charge it on different bases. Divide total fees by the item price to get the number that matters for pricing:
| Platform | $25 item (+$8 ship) | $100 item (+$12 ship) |
|---|---|---|
| eBay | 19.6% | 15.6% |
| Poshmark | 20.0% | 20.0% |
| Mercari | 13.2% | 11.2% |
| Depop | 6.2% | 4.1% |
| Etsy (vintage) | 14.4% | 11.1% |
| Facebook (shipped) | 13.2% | 11.2% |
| Whatnot | 13.0% | 11.5% |
| Vinted | 0% | 0% |
Two patterns jump out. First, fees charged on shipping hit cheap items hardest — eBay’s 13.6% becomes almost 20% on a $25 shirt because $8 of shipping is a third of the order. Second, fixed per-order amounts ($0.40 on eBay, $0.45 on Depop, $0.25 + $0.20 on Etsy, $0.30 on Whatnot) matter at $10 and disappear at $100.
On Poshmark the math goes the other way at the bottom end: a $10 sale pays $2.95, or 29.5%. A $14 sale pays 21%, and a $15 sale pays $3.00 — so pricing at $15 instead of $14 costs you five cents in fees and gets you $0.95 more.
Which platform for which item
Fees are the tiebreaker, not the deciding factor. Here’s how we’d route inventory, fees and buyer pool together:
| Item type | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Men’s clothing, workwear, outdoor gear, parts, collectibles, electronics | eBay | Largest search-driven buyer pool; buyers search by exact model, size and item specifics. |
| Women’s mall and contemporary brands $15–$60 | Poshmark, Mercari | Buyers browse by brand and make offers; Poshmark’s 20% is priced into how buyers negotiate there. |
| Y2K, streetwear, vintage tees, trend pieces aimed at younger buyers | Depop | Style-led browsing and the lowest US fees of the paid platforms. |
| Genuine vintage home goods, textiles, jewelry, craft supplies | Etsy | Buyers expect to pay for vintage; used goods under 20 years old don’t belong there. |
| Furniture, bulky or heavy items, anything under ~$15 | Facebook Marketplace (local) | No fee, no shipping, no box. Shipping a $10 item rarely makes sense anywhere. |
| Trading cards, sneakers, fast-moving lots you can talk about on camera | Whatnot | Live auctions create urgency, but you need an audience and show time. |
| Everyday clothing where every dollar of margin matters | Vinted, as a crosslist | Zero seller fees; the US buyer pool is newer, so treat it as extra reach, not your main channel. |
Most full-time sellers don’t choose one — they list on the platform with the best demand and crosslist to one or two others. If you do that, price each platform so your net is the same, not your list price. Our crosslisting guide covers how.
Pricing so fees don’t eat your margin
Reverse the math: decide what you need to net, then set the price. For a platform with a percentage fee f charged on the item only (like Poshmark), list price = target net ÷ (1 − f). To net $40 on Poshmark you need $50. For platforms that also charge on shipping, add the fee on shipping back in: to net $40 on eBay with $8 shipping, list at about ($40 + $0.40 + 13.6% × $8) ÷ 0.864 = $48.02.
Then leave room for offers. If you accept offers on Poshmark or eBay, your realistic sale price is usually below list, and the fee is charged on the accepted price. Pricing and offer strategy is its own topic — see how to price used items to sell.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting eBay charges on shipping and tax. Sellers who calculate 13.6% of the item price underestimate eBay fees by a dollar or more on almost every sale.
- Offering “free shipping” without raising the price. On eBay the fee is on the total either way, but if you absorb an $8 label on a $25 item, your net drops from about $20 to about $13.
- Listing cheap items on Poshmark. Under $15 you pay $2.95 no matter what. Bundle or crosslist low-dollar pieces elsewhere.
- Ignoring optional fees you turned on. Promoted Listings on eBay, Boosted Listings on Depop and Offsite Ads on Etsy are all charged on top of the base fees above, and they’re easy to forget when you check your margin.
- Letting your eBay seller level slip. eBay adds a surcharge to final value fees for sellers who fall below its performance standards. Late shipping and cancellations cost you twice.
- Comparing fees but not sell-through. A 0% fee platform where the item doesn’t sell is a 100% loss of your time. Check sold comps on each platform before assuming the cheapest one wins.

FAQ
Which reselling platform has the lowest fees in 2026?
For US sellers, Vinted charges sellers nothing (the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee instead), and Depop charges no selling fee, only payment processing of about 3.3% + $0.45. Facebook Marketplace local pickup with cash is also free. Among the big general marketplaces, Mercari (10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping) and Facebook shipped orders (10%) come next, then eBay at 13.6% + $0.40 for most categories and Poshmark at 20%. Lowest fee is not the same as highest profit, though: the platform with more buyers for your item often pays more even after fees.
Does eBay charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, shipping and handling charged to the buyer, sales tax and other applicable fees. So on a most-categories item, every $10 the buyer pays in shipping or tax costs you $1.36 in fees.
How much does Poshmark take from a $10 sale?
Poshmark charges a flat $2.95 on sales under $15, so you keep $7.05 on a $10 sale, an effective 29.5% fee. At $15 and above the fee switches to 20%. That flat fee is why many Poshmark sellers bundle cheap items or avoid listing below $15.
Does Mercari still charge a payment processing fee?
Not on listings created or updated since January 6, 2025. Mercari now charges sellers a flat 10% on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, with no separate processing fee. Buyers pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee. Older listings kept the previous fee structure until they were updated. Cashing out with Instant Pay costs a $3 flat fee.
Is Facebook Marketplace free to sell on?
Local pickup where the buyer pays you in person has no Marketplace selling fee. Shipped orders paid through Facebook checkout carry a selling fee of 10% per transaction with a $0.80 minimum, calculated on the whole transaction including shipping and applicable taxes.
Can I sell used clothing on Etsy?
Only if it qualifies as vintage (Etsy defines vintage as at least 20 years old), handmade, or a craft supply. Modern used mall-brand clothing is not allowed on Etsy, so for most everyday thrift finds the fee comparison is academic.
