Swappa is a marketplace for used tech, mostly phones, and it works differently from eBay or Facebook Marketplace. There’s no auction, no parts listings and no “as is”: a person at Swappa checks each listing before buyers see it. That gatekeeping is why buyers trust it and why fees are low — and why a device with a crack or a lock on it can’t be sold there at all.
Who Swappa is for and what sells
Swappa’s main categories are iPhones and other phones, tablets, laptops, watches and gaming, with more tech categories behind them. Its listing rules are built for devices with an IMEI or serial number, a screen and a battery.
Experience, not Swappa data: Swappa is at its best for recent iPhones, Pixels and Galaxy flagships, iPads, MacBooks and Apple Watches in Mint or Good condition — items with a clear model, storage size and carrier that buyers already know the going rate for. Swappa buyers compare listings side by side, so a price even a few dollars above similar listings sits. It’s a poor fit for anything broken, locked, very old or low-value, where the fixed processing charge and your shipping cost eat most of the sale; those belong on eBay (as for parts) or Facebook Marketplace.
Swappa listing requirements
To be listed, Swappa says a device must be:
- Fully functional, with no cracked or chipped glass, water damage or structural issues.
- Clean IMEI / ESN and ready for activation. The IMEI can’t be blocklisted, the hardware and software IMEI must match, and a device with an altered or “repaired” IMEI can’t be listed.
- Free of any OS or activation lock — that means signed out of Apple’s Find My / iCloud and removed from the Google account (factory reset protection) before you ship.
- Not financed or leased. A phone with a remaining carrier installment balance doesn’t qualify until it’s paid off.
Swappa also won’t accept devices repaired multiple times for defects, recalled items, units marked “Not for Resale,” pre-production or demo units, or chargers with exposed wires. Use Swappa’s free IMEI check before you list; it reports whether the GSMA registry shows the device as allowed or blocked.
Condition grades
Swappa uses four grades, and the three used grades all require a fully working device — the grade describes cosmetics only:
- New: factory-sealed and never set up or activated.
- Mint: no visible wear at all — no screen scratches, scuffs or worn edges.
- Good: minor scratches on the screen or back, small scuffs.
- Fair: noticeable wear — visible display scratches, scuffs on several surfaces.
Battery health is judged separately. There’s no minimum battery percentage, but the battery must charge and discharge properly, and for iPhones you must disclose when battery health is below 80% and Apple’s battery message appears.
How to list your first device on Swappa
- Run the IMEI check (Settings → General → About on an iPhone or iPad; Settings → About phone on Android). If it’s blocked, stop here.
- Back up, then sign out. Turn off Find My and sign out of your Apple ID, or remove your Google account on Android. Don’t factory reset yet if you still need the device for the verification photo — but do remove the account locks before shipping.
- Find the exact product on Swappa’s sell page and choose model, storage, color and carrier. Getting these right matters: buyers filter by them.
- Pick an honest grade. Grading Good as Mint is the fastest route to an unhappy buyer and a dispute.
- Take the verification photo. Swappa gives you a unique listing code. Write it on paper and photograph it next to the whole device with the screen on at the home screen (not the lock screen). Keep the code legible and flat, use a neutral background and landscape orientation, and keep the IMEI out of frame. Sealed items need a photo of the intact factory seal.
- Add the rest of the photos — back, sides, corners and any marks — and a short, factual description.
- Enter the IMEI (or serial for Wi-Fi-only devices). Swappa keeps it private until the item sells.
- Set your ask price. Buyers see your ask plus their 3%. Check the live listings for the same model, storage, carrier and grade, and see our pricing guide for how to use sold data.
- Submit for review. Staff check the verification photo, the IMEI or serial, the listing criteria and your seller history, and may ask for extra verification. Swappa doesn’t publish a review time.
Listings expire after 10 days
Each Extend Listing click adds 7 more days, for free, up to 60 days total. After that you have to create a new listing with new photos, so Swappa knows the device is still in the same condition. Lower the price with Edit Listing any time.Swappa fees
Swappa has charged both sides the same flat 3% since March 2022; before that, buyers paid the fees. The seller side looks like this:
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | Free | — |
| Swappa seller fee | 3% | Your ask price |
| PayPal processing | 3.49% + $0.49 | What the buyer pays (ask + 3%) |
| Stripe processing (select sellers) | 2.9% + $0.30 | What the buyer pays |
| Featured listing (optional) | $5 | Per listing, non-refundable |
| Buyer fee | 3% | Added on top of your ask — not deducted from you |
Sellers are required to have a PayPal account. Swappa says Stripe card checkout is available to its Power Sellers and Enterprise Sellers, so most first-time sellers are paid through PayPal. You’re paid when the item sells, before you ship.
Worked example
You list an iPhone at a $300 ask. The buyer pays $309 (plus any sales tax Swappa collects), and you’re paid through PayPal:
- Swappa fee: 3% × $300 = $9.00.
- PayPal: 3.49% × $309 + $0.49 = $11.27.
- You keep $279.73 — about 93.2% of your ask — before your shipping label and insurance.
- With Stripe instead: 2.9% × $309 + $0.30 = $9.26, so you’d keep $281.74.
| Ask price | Buyer pays | Swappa + PayPal | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | $103 | $3.00 + $4.08 | $92.92 |
| $300 | $309 | $9.00 + $11.27 | $279.73 |
| $600 | $618 | $18.00 + $22.06 | $559.94 |
These match Swappa’s own examples, which leave sales tax out. Swappa’s fee page lists tax as part of the PayPal partner fee, so if tax ends up in the processing base your cost rises by a few cents to a dollar. For how this compares with eBay, Mercari and others, see our 2026 fee comparison.
Featured listings
A featured listing costs $5. It adds an orange star and moves the listing to the top of the category page, where featured listings are sorted by price. It’s non-refundable, though Swappa lets you transfer it to a relisted copy of the same product if the original expires. Our take: it helps a well-priced listing in a crowded model; it doesn’t rescue an overpriced one, because featured listings are still sorted by price.
Shipping a Swappa sale
- Ship within two business days of receiving payment. Holidays don’t count as business days.
- You pay for shipping. Standard shipping on Swappa means a ground service with tracking and insurance that covers the full price of the listing. Build the label cost into your ask.
- Ground only for lithium batteries. Used electronics with lithium batteries can’t go by air, and USPS won’t take them to APO, FPO or DPO addresses.
- Ship to the checkout address — the one the buyer used at checkout — or you lose PayPal seller protection.
- Post tracking in the Shipping section of the private sale page. Swappa also recommends adding it to the PayPal transaction.
Swappa no longer officially supports express shipping; buyer and seller can arrange it privately after the sale. Before you seal the box, factory reset the device and double-check that the Apple or Google account is gone — an activation-locked phone is unusable to the buyer.
What happened to Swappa Local?
Swappa Local, the old meetup and local delivery service, is no longer active. Local pickup is still allowed if both of you agree on the sale page after checkout, but Swappa advises against it because it can void PayPal’s payment protections, and arranging a meetup before checkout is prohibited. If you want to sell face to face, see our guide to selling locally.
Common mistakes
- Listing before the phone is paid off. Financed or leased devices aren’t allowed until the balance is cleared.
- Leaving Find My or the Google account on. It fails Swappa’s criteria and bricks the phone for the buyer.
- A blurry or angled listing code, or the IMEI in the photo. Both get the listing sent back.
- Grading generously. Mint means no visible wear. Describe every mark and let the photos agree.
- Forgetting insured shipping in your price. Full-value insurance is required, and it’s your cost.
- Letting listings lapse. Extend before day 10, or you’ll be re-shooting photos.
- Pricing from memory. Used phone prices drop every time a new model launches. Check what the same model is going for right now — start with our electronics price guide.

FAQ
How much does Swappa take when you sell?
Listing is free. When the item sells, the seller pays a flat 3% of the ask price to Swappa, and the payment processor takes its cut of what the buyer pays: 3.49% + $0.49 through PayPal, or 2.9% + $0.30 through Stripe for sellers who have card checkout. The buyer pays a separate 3% on top of your ask price. On a $300 ask paid through PayPal you keep about $279.73 before shipping.
Can I sell a phone with a cracked screen or one that is still financed on Swappa?
No. Swappa only accepts devices that are fully functional, with no cracked or chipped glass, no water damage, a clean IMEI or ESN, no OS or activation lock, and that are not financed or leased. Broken or financed devices have to be sold elsewhere, for example on eBay as for parts, once any balance is paid off.
What is a Swappa verification photo?
It is a photo of the whole device with the screen on at the home screen, next to a piece of paper showing the unique listing code Swappa gives you when you create the listing. The code must be clearly legible and the IMEI must not appear in the photo. Swappa staff review it before the listing goes live, which proves you actually have the device.
How long do I have to ship a Swappa sale?
Two business days after you receive payment. You pay for shipping, it must be a ground service with tracking and insurance covering the full price, and it must go to the address the buyer used at checkout. Add the tracking number in the Shipping section of the sale page.
Can I sell locally on Swappa?
Not through a dedicated service any more: Swappa Local is no longer active. Swappa allows local pickup only if both buyer and seller agree on the sale page after checkout, and it warns that doing so can void PayPal payment protections. Arranging a meetup before checkout is prohibited.
