How to Start Your Own Reseller Website in 2026: Shopify Costs & Traffic

When your own store beats the marketplaces, what Shopify and its alternatives really cost in 2026, how to handle one-of-a-kind inventory and sales tax, and where the traffic comes from when nobody knows your URL.

Every reseller eventually does the math: 13–20% to a marketplace versus under 3% to a card processor. Your own website can be the best move you make or a monthly bill for a store nobody visits. The difference is almost never the platform — it’s whether you already have buyers who’ll come to you. Prices below are US, as of September 2026.

When your own store makes sense

  • You have repeat buyers. Collectors of your niche, vintage clients who ask “what else do you have?”, followers who shop your drops. Moving them off-platform (without breaking marketplace rules about steering buyers from an existing order) is where the fee savings are real.
  • You sell a niche with a name. Vintage workwear, mid-century lamps, Pyrex, film cameras. A focused store with a point of view is something people bookmark; a general thrift mix isn’t.
  • You’re building a brand on Instagram or TikTok and want a checkout that isn’t someone else’s app.
  • You’re at volume. The subscription is fixed, so it matters less the more you sell.

Experience, not platform data: if you have none of these, keep selling on marketplaces and build an audience first. A store with no traffic is the most expensive way to sell nothing.

Shopify plans and fees

PlanMonthly billingYearly billingOnline card rate (Shopify Payments)Fee if using another processor
Basic$39/mo$29/mo2.9% + 30¢2%
Grow$105/mo$79/mo2.7% + 30¢1%
Advanced$399/mo$299/mo2.5% + 30¢0.6%

Basic is enough for almost every reseller; Grow only pays off in card-rate savings at high volume. Use Shopify Payments unless you have a reason not to — a third-party processor means paying its fee and Shopify’s. In-person card rates are lower (2.6% + 10¢ on Basic) if you sell at markets or pop-ups. Shopify’s introductory offer at the time of writing was 3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months; check the pricing page for the current one. Budget separately for a domain, any paid theme and paid apps.

Worked example: $2,000 a month

Fifty orders a month at $40 each, shipping built into the price, sales tax left out (eBay’s percentage also applies to sales tax, so its real number is slightly higher):

Where you sellMathMonthly cost% of sales
Shopify Basic (monthly)$39 + 2.9% × $2,000 + 50 × $0.30$112.005.6%
Shopify Basic (yearly)$29 + $58 + $15$102.005.1%
Etsy50 × $0.20 + 6.5% × $2,000 + (3% × $2,000 + 50 × $0.25)$212.5010.6%
eBay, no store (most categories)13.6% × $2,000 + 50 × $0.40$292.0014.6%
Poshmark20% × $2,000$400.0020%

Shopify saves about $180 a month over eBay here. Per $40 order the gap is about $4.38 ($5.84 eBay vs $1.46 card fees), so roughly nine orders a month cover the $39 subscription. Now the honest part: that $180 is your whole marketing budget. If you spend $150 on ads to get those 50 orders, you’ve rebuilt eBay’s fee with more work. Etsy figures exclude Offsite Ads and relisting fees on items that don’t sell. For your own numbers, run them through the profit calculator below or compare platforms in our reseller fee comparison.

One-of-a-kind inventory

Shopify is built for brands selling the same product hundreds of times. Resellers sell each item once, which creates two problems:

  • Selling it twice. Turn on inventory tracking with a quantity of 1, and leave “Sell when out of stock” off, so one order sells it out.
  • Selling it on two platforms. If the same item is on eBay too, something has to delist it everywhere when it sells. Shopify’s Marketplace Connect app syncs listings and orders with eBay, Amazon, Walmart and Target Plus (new Etsy connections aren’t supported); check its app listing for current pricing. Crosslisting tools do the same across more marketplaces — see our crosslisting guide.
  • Sold pages. Experience, not Google guidance: keep sold pages up as “sold” with a link to similar items rather than deleting them — they collect search traffic and show buyers your range. Google’s product markup has a SoldOut availability value for exactly this.

Listing your first item

  1. Start the trial on Basic and pick a free theme. Don’t spend a week on design; you can change it later.
  2. Connect a domain (buy it through Shopify or point one you own) so your links don’t say myshopify.com.
  3. Set up Shopify Payments and your store policies: returns, shipping and contact info.
  4. Set shipping rates. A flat rate or free shipping over a threshold is simplest for used goods; calculated rates need accurate weights on every product.
  5. Add the product: a title written like a marketplace title (brand, item, key details, size), a description with measurements and flaws, all your photos, price, SKU and shipping weight.
  6. Set inventory to 1 with tracking on and “Sell when out of stock” off.
  7. Turn on tax collection for your home state (and anywhere else you have nexus — see below).
  8. Place a test order, refund it, then connect Google Merchant Center so your products are eligible for free listings.

Shipping

On a marketplace, labels, tracking uploads and buyer shipping charges are handled for you. On your own site, you choose the rates buyers see and you buy the labels, either through Shopify in the admin or a separate label service. Experience, not Shopify data: most resellers do best with a flat rate by size (small, medium, large) or free shipping built into the price, because calculated rates only work if every listing has an accurate weight. Our cheap shipping guide covers packaging and services.

SEO: what to expect

Experience, not Google data: a new domain takes months to earn organic traffic, and for common products eBay, Etsy and Poshmark will outrank you almost every time — they have years of authority and millions of pages. Your realistic organic wins are long-tail searches in your niche (“1970s Pyrex Butterprint 2.5 qt”) and your own brand name. Two things are worth doing from day one:

  • Product structured data. Google uses it to show price and availability in results. Check your theme outputs it with Google’s Rich Results Test.
  • Google’s free listings. Products in Merchant Center can appear on the Shopping tab, Search, Images, Lens, YouTube and Maps at no cost — the one free Google channel that doesn’t need domain age.

Driving traffic

  • Instagram and TikTok: the finds, the hunt, styling and packing videos. Resellers with a store mostly sell to followers, and drops (“20 new pieces Sunday at 7pm”) concentrate demand.
  • Email: collect addresses from day one — at checkout, in your marketplace packages with a discount code (where the marketplace’s rules allow inserts), at markets. A list you own is the only channel no algorithm can take away.
  • Keep the marketplaces. Most successful store owners still sell on eBay or Etsy and treat the store as the home for repeat buyers, not a replacement.

Payments and sales tax

On eBay, the marketplace calculates, collects and remits sales tax for you in every US state as a marketplace facilitator. On your own website, that job is yours. You generally must collect in states where you have a physical presence (your home state), and in other states once your sales there pass that state’s economic nexus threshold — and some states count your marketplace sales toward it. Shopify can calculate tax (Shopify Tax is free up to $100,000 in sales, then charges a small per-order fee; check the current rate), but it doesn’t register you or file your returns. The exception is Shopify’s Shop channel, which has collected and remitted US tax on its orders since January 1, 2025. Talk to an accountant once you sell into many states. Separately, card processors report your gross sales on Form 1099-K — see 1099-K for resellers.

Register before you collect

Collecting sales tax without a permit — or not collecting in your home state — are both problems. Get your state seller’s permit before your first order.

Common mistakes

  • Launching with no audience. Build the following first, then open the store.
  • Paying for apps before your first sale. Reviews, upsells and pop-ups can cost more than the plan.
  • Quantity left at the default. Untracked inventory lets two buyers purchase your only one.
  • Buying ads to replace marketplace fees. Track cost per order; if it’s over 14%, eBay was cheaper.
  • Ignoring sales tax because a marketplace always handled it.
  • Closing your marketplace shops. They’re your traffic until the store has its own.

FAQ

How much does Shopify cost for a reseller in 2026?

Shopify Basic is $39 a month billed monthly or $29 a month billed yearly, and Shopify Payments charges 2.9% + 30¢ per online card sale on Basic. Grow is $105 a month ($79 yearly) with 2.7% + 30¢, and Advanced is $399 ($299 yearly) with 2.5% + 30¢. If you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own transaction fee (2% on Basic).

Is Shopify cheaper than eBay?

Per sale, yes. At $2,000 a month in sales (50 orders of $40), Shopify Basic costs about $112 in subscription and card fees versus about $292 in eBay fees in most categories. But eBay brings the buyers and Shopify does not, so the saving only counts if your own store generates those sales without paying for ads.

Do I have to collect sales tax on my own website?

Possibly. Marketplaces like eBay collect and remit sales tax for you as marketplace facilitators, but on your own site it is your responsibility to work out where you have nexus (physical presence, or sales above a state’s economic threshold) and to register, collect and remit there. Shopify can calculate tax, but it does not decide your obligations for you, except on its Shop channel, which has collected and remitted US tax on its orders since January 1, 2025.

How do I stop selling a one-of-a-kind item twice?

Turn on inventory tracking with a quantity of 1 and leave “sell when out of stock” off, so Shopify marks it sold out after one order. If the same item is also listed on marketplaces, use a sync tool such as Shopify’s Marketplace Connect app or a crosslister that delists everywhere when it sells.

How long does it take for a new store to show up on Google?

Expect months, not weeks, for organic search on a new domain, and for common products the big marketplaces will usually outrank you. Google’s free product listings through Merchant Center are the faster route: approved products can appear in the Shopping tab, Images and Search at no cost.
