About the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM

Announced in May 2015 to replace the EF 50mm f/1.8 II, with a metal mount, a quieter stepping-motor (STM) autofocus and a 7-blade aperture. It fits Canon EF and EF-S DSLRs and RF mirrorless bodies with an adapter. Check that autofocus and the manual focus ring work smoothly.

What affects the price

  • Fungus (web-like threads), haze or separation inside the glass. Shine a flashlight through the lens to check.
  • Oily or sticky aperture blades, and a smooth, even focus ring.
  • Scratches on the front element and cleaning marks. Light dust is normal and barely affects price.
  • Front and rear caps, the hood and the original box add a little; the mount matters most for who can use it.
