About the Helios 44-2 58mm f/2
A Soviet copy of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm f/2 in M42 screw mount, made in the millions from 1967 and supplied with Zenit SLRs. It is famous for its “swirly” out-of-focus backgrounds and is widely adapted to mirrorless cameras. It uses a preset aperture ring (no auto pin); check for haze, fungus, and a smooth focus ring.
What affects the price
- Fungus (web-like threads), haze or separation inside the glass. Shine a flashlight through the lens to check.
- Oily or sticky aperture blades, and a smooth, even focus ring.
- Scratches on the front element and cleaning marks. Light dust is normal and barely affects price.
- Front and rear caps, the hood and the original box add a little; the mount matters most for who can use it.
