About the Helios 44M 58mm f/2
The later Helios-44M series (44M, 44M-4, 44M-5 and others, grouped here) keeps the Biotar-type 58mm f/2 optics in M42 mount but adds an automatic “jumping” diaphragm, an 8-blade aperture and an M/A switch. On adapters that do not press the aperture pin, set the switch to M to stop the lens down. Check for haze, fungus, and oily blades.
What affects the price
- Fungus (web-like threads), haze or separation inside the glass. Shine a flashlight through the lens to check.
- Oily or sticky aperture blades, and a smooth, even focus ring.
- Scratches on the front element and cleaning marks. Light dust is normal and barely affects price.
- Front and rear caps, the hood and the original box add a little; the mount matters most for who can use it.
