About the Yashica Electro 35

Yashica’s Electro 35 line began in 1966 and pairs a fixed Color-Yashinon 45mm f/1.7 lens with an electronically timed, aperture-priority shutter; the common GSN and GTN versions arrived in 1973. It was designed for a 5.6V mercury battery, so most now run on a 6V PX28/4LR44 cell with an adapter. Check for a deteriorated “pad of death”, the internal rubber pad whose decay causes exposure and shutter faults.

What affects the price

  • Rangefinder alignment: the double image should merge cleanly at infinity and close up.
  • Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
  • Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
  • Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
  • A clean, bright viewfinder with no haze in the rangefinder patch.
