About the Nikon F3
The F3 (1980–2001) is Nikon’s longest-running professional SLR, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro with the first red grip stripe, and adds aperture-priority auto exposure. It runs on two LR44 cells with a mechanical 1/60 sec backup release. The high-eyepoint F3HP is included here; the titanium F3/T, F3P, F3H and F3AF are not.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- Viewfinder and prism: haze, fungus or de-silvering (dark bands) in the finder.
- Film-tested listings, with sample photos, sell for more than “untested”.
