About the Nikon FG
The FG (1982) was the first Nikon SLR with programmed auto exposure, alongside aperture priority and manual. It takes Nikon F-mount lenses and two SR44/LR44 cells, with mechanical backup settings when the batteries are dead. The simplified FG-20 is a different model.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- Viewfinder and prism: haze, fungus or de-silvering (dark bands) in the finder.
- Film-tested listings, with sample photos, sell for more than “untested”.
