About the Nikon FM
The original FM (1977) is a compact mechanical Nikon F-mount SLR with a titanium-bladed shutter to 1/1000 sec. Two LR44/SR44 cells power only the meter, so the camera works without batteries. Its successor, the FM2, is priced separately.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- Viewfinder and prism: haze, fungus or de-silvering (dark bands) in the finder.
- Film-tested listings, with sample photos, sell for more than “untested”.
