About the Canon A-1
Canon’s A-1 (1978) was the first SLR with an electronically controlled programmed auto-exposure mode, alongside shutter priority, aperture priority, stopped-down AE and manual. It was sold in black only, takes Canon FD lenses and needs a 4LR44/PX28 battery.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
