About the Canon AE-1 Program
Introduced in 1981, the AE-1 Program added a full program auto-exposure mode to the AE-1’s shutter priority and manual modes, plus a brighter interchangeable focusing screen. It takes Canon FD lenses and runs on a 6V 4LR44 battery. Like the other A-series cameras it can develop a squealing mirror brake.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
