About the Canon AE-1
Canon’s AE-1, launched in 1976, was the first SLR built around a digital integrated circuit and was the first SLR for millions of amateur photographers. It is a shutter-priority 35mm SLR for Canon FD-mount lenses and will not fire without its 6V 4LR44/4SR44 (PX28) battery. Worn examples can develop the “Canon squeal” from the mirror mechanism.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
