About the Canon AV-1
The AV-1 (1979) is the aperture-priority member of Canon’s A-series, built at the request of distributors who wanted an aperture-priority alternative to the AE-1. It has no fully manual exposure mode and takes Canon FD lenses.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- Viewfinder and prism: haze, fungus or de-silvering (dark bands) in the finder.
