About the Leica M3
Launched in 1954 and made until 1966, the M3 was the first camera with the Leica M bayonet mount. Early bodies have a double-stroke film advance, replaced by single-stroke from 1958. Soviet FED and Zorki cameras are often dressed up as Leicas, so check the serial number and engravings.
What affects the price
- Rangefinder alignment: the double image should merge cleanly at infinity and close up.
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- A clean, bright viewfinder with no haze in the rangefinder patch.

What should I list a Leica M3 for?+
List at around $1,824.99 to sit mid-pack with room for offers, or around $1,288.99 to sell it quickly. Condition, what’s included and good photos move it up or down.
Are these sold prices?+
No. eBay only shares sold prices with approved partners, so this guide uses current asking prices on eBay (items for sale right now), drops accessories, parts-only and outlier listings, and discounts the middle of the range to estimate the sale price. It is updated weekly.
Does the Leica M3 price include a lens?+
No. The guide prices the body alone: listings that include a lens are left out. A lens adds its own value; see the lens guides.
