About the Pentax MX
The MX is Pentax’s compact, fully mechanical manual-exposure SLR with an LED meter display, Pentax’s flagship until the LX arrived. It takes Pentax K-mount lenses and needs batteries only for the meter; it is unrelated to the digital Pentax MX-1.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- Viewfinder and prism: haze, fungus or de-silvering (dark bands) in the finder.
