About the Pentax Spotmatic
The Spotmatic was one of the first SLRs with through-the-lens metering; despite the name, the original uses stop-down, center-weighted metering. It takes M42 screw-mount (Takumar) lenses. This guide covers the mechanical Spotmatic, SP II and Spotmatic F, not the budget SP500/SP1000 or the electronic ES.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- Viewfinder and prism: haze, fungus or de-silvering (dark bands) in the finder.
