About the Sony Walkman WM-FX

Sony’s WM-FX series pairs a cassette player with an AM/FM radio and was sold through the 1990s and 2000s; the WM-FX290W of 2004 was the last cassette Walkman released in the US. Check both the tape and the radio, and listen for speed wobble from an old belt.

What affects the price

  • Whether it plays at the right speed. Old drive belts stretch; a recently replaced belt adds value.
  • Battery compartment corrosion and a working headphone jack.
  • Clean, working auto-reverse, radio and recording (on models that have them).
  • Cosmetic condition matters a lot for collectible Walkmans.
