About the Atari 2600

The Atari 2600 launched in September 1977 as the Atari Video Computer System (CX2600). Variants include the six-switch “Heavy Sixer” and “Light Sixer”, four-switch models and the all-black “Vader”; the 1986 2600 Jr. and the modern Atari 2600+ reissue are excluded from this guide.

What affects the price

  • Whether it’s tested with a game: disc drives that don’t read or cartridge slots that need re-seating lower the price.
  • What’s included: power supply, video cable and one original controller are expected.
  • Yellowing, cracks and missing screws or labels.
  • Mods (region-free, custom firmware, HDMI) change the buyer pool, so they’re left out of this guide.
