About the Canon FTb
The FTb (1971) was Canon’s mechanical, match-needle SLR for advanced amateurs alongside the professional F-1; the revised FTb-N (1973) is priced together here. It takes FD lenses (and older FL lenses) and its meter was designed for a now-obsolete 1.35V PX625 mercury cell, so modern substitutes or zinc-air cells are used.
What affects the price
- Whether the shutter fires at every speed. Slow speeds that drag or a shutter that sticks cut the value sharply.
- Light seals and the mirror bumper: sticky or crumbling foam causes light leaks. Cheap to fix, but buyers price it in.
- Battery compartment corrosion and whether the light meter still reads.
- Viewfinder and prism: haze, fungus or de-silvering (dark bands) in the finder.
